Why Premier League Tickets Are So Expensive?

Have you ever wonder why buying ticket for Premier League games it’s so complicated and expensive? If not, now it’s the time to do it. Personally, I have tried numerous times to purchase tickets, but I was either stopped by the high price or the unavailability to find one. So that’s why I decided to do a research and find out why it is so challenging to go and watch the Premier League.

Is It Expensive To Buy A Ticket?

According to research that Premier League have done for season 2018/19 in cases when people are buying seasonal tickets, they have concluded that paying £400 for the whole season will divide by the 19 PL home games you attend. Therefore, it makes it £21,05 in this case. It doesn’t look too bad, but it depends on which club you support. For instance, if you are Arsenal supporter, you might have to pay much more than that price.

Further findings from the research show that the average price for a Premier League ticket it’s £31 in comparison with 2017/2018 season when the price of a single ticket were £32. Another interesting fact is that season ticket holders occupy one in four seats at Premier League grounds(3.6 million out of 13.3 million).

Also, half of the season tickets are sold below the full price, saving fans £13.1 million. Also, if you have been a long term season holder clubs are allowing you to renew your deal at a lower price than the previous one. So it doesn’t look too bad so far.

If you are planning to watch away game of your favourite team, it might not be so expensive to buy a ticket. The study also found that 26.5 per cent of away tickets purchased have priced under the £30 gap at £26 or less. In general, the average price for away ticket for season 2018/19 was £28.

Season Tickets- Why Should Be So Expensive?

Football stadiums without fans it’s like trees without leaves, and if you have watched a football game in close doors without any fans, you will want to forget about that: no chants, no songs, no atmosphere, nothing. Its just 22 players on the pitch who are chasing the ball and the only thing you can hear are their voices. It is more like a funeral than a football game.

Back in the past football was huge among working-class people, but over time, the correlation between football violence and the working class people grew increasingly alarming. Therefore, the clubs decided to do something about it and save their good reputation by raising season tickets prices, so only wealthy people from higher levels of society could afford that luxury.

Prices for season tickets for Premier League 2019/20 season vary from the cheapest one which is Sheffield United £458 to the most expensive one which is Tottenham Hotspurs available for £1,995, followed by Arsenal £1768, Chelsea £1,250, Liverpool £865, Manchester United £950 and Manchester City £950. For the rest of the clubs, prices vary from £855 to £515.

In comparison with some other top leagues in Europe, the English Premier League season tickets are the most expensive one. For example Borussia Dortmund, one of the most popular and titled German clubs, sale their season tickets from only 380 euro which in comparison with Tottenham Hotspurs season tickets it’s almost five times cheaper.

Is it Time for Premier Leagues Football Clubs To Change Their Prices?

My opinion is that unfortunately nowadays football clubs owners look at their clubs more like any other business and less at the actual sport. To cover the huge salaries that footballers are receiving and the increasing demand.

They have to raise tickets prices with every other year, and the biggest loser, in this case, it’s the ordinary football fans, who have to pay almost quarter of their monthly salaries, so they can go and enjoy watching their favourite team. So definitely it’s time for English clubs to lower their prices unless they want to continue naively neglecting the importance of their supporter’s voices.

I will be more than happy if you want to share your view of how much season tickets should cost? Feel free to leave your comments down below.
